Composer Bio

My compositions (and in one case some of my poetry) have been included on two recently released recordings, and my music has been performed in Canada, the United States, and the UK. I received a SOCAN Young Composers award (Sir Ernest MacMillan award, third prize, for composition for large ensemble/orchestra) for my 2010 composition Re:Play, and I have composed soundtracks for award winning short films. I am currently based in Halifax and working on composition projects in Nova Scotia, but I continue to maintain creative connections in Toronto through my involvement with the Toy Piano Composers, and working with other groups such as Essential Opera

In 2013 I graduated from the University of Toronto with a Doctor of Musical Arts degree in composition, where I studied composition with Chan Ka Nin, James Rolfe, and Christos Hatzis. I completed a Master of Music in composition (with a minor project in improvisation) at the University of Newcastle (UK) in 2004, and a Bachelor of Music in clarinet performance at Dalhousie University in 2002.

In 2013 I participated in the Canadian League of Composers/Canadian Music Centre Emerging Composers Mentorship program, where I had an opportunity to work with the Canadian Contemporary Music Workshop and with Contact Contemporary Music Ensemble. I have also participated in a number of workshops for emerging composers, including Opera From Scratch, ArrayMusic Emerging Composers Workshop, and Scotia Festival of Music Young Artists Program.

My current creative research interests include narrative and storytelling in music, musical communication, miniatures and character pieces, and creatively exploring how ideas transform as they are transmitted from one person to another or from one (performance) medium to another. Past research and creative projects have included investigating the work and ideas of women composing in Canada, and creatively seeking ways to create compositions for live performance that are relevant for audiences of the digital age.

I am always interested in opportunities for music composition, performance, or collaborative projects, and am also available to teach music lessons or help with editing/arranging music, so please contact me if you would like to hire me, commission some music, or collaborate.

I have written music for some award-winning animations, including

Humpty Dumpty is Scrambled by animator Yuriy Sivers
(winner of Best Animated Film at the TIFF Student Film Showcase)
